An eVisa (electronic visa) is an official visa applied for and issued entirely online, then linked digitally to the traveller's passport instead of a physical sticker or stamp. Applicants complete a government form, upload documents and pay online, receiving approval by email. eVisas are issued before travel — unlike a visa on arrival.
How an eVisa works
An eVisa moves the whole visa process online. The traveller applies on an official government portal, uploads supporting documents such as a passport scan and photo, pays the fee and later receives an approved eVisa by email. Because it is stored electronically and tied to the passport number, no embassy visit or physical stamp is needed.
At the border, immigration officers pull up the eVisa record electronically. Travellers often carry a printout as a backup. As with any visa, an eVisa does not by itself guarantee entry — the border officer makes the final decision.
eVisa vs visa on arrival
An eVisa is obtained before travel, giving advance approval and reducing the risk of being refused after a long journey. A visa on arrival is issued at the border and, while convenient, carries the risk of queues or refusal on the spot.
